Shit, Now that you mention it I saw ZWAN in Nurenburg Germany last year and Chamberlain honestly should have been the only one on stage- he sounded like the hard rock version of Carter Beuford....

nice picks mat, i was listening to tales from the punch bowl yesterday and noticing how HUGE the drums sound.
i don't know much about percussioning, so its hard for me to pick favorite albums for such a thing. i dare say that BOTC by houston is up there, as are lula and the egg. count 'python' in there too.
how bout zeppelin II or IV? the kick on 'when the levee breaks' is bigger than any other drum sound ever, and that was 31 years ago.
also in the classic rock section might have to be 'are you experienced?' by hendrix-mitch mitchell was one rockin' fella.
the list could go on and on and on...

Not exactly rock percussion. But the Moroccan drummers of Joujouka and the drummers of Burundi have some truly wonderful recordings. Brian Jones recorded the former before he passed away, and William S. Burroughs, the Stones and Led Zep all expressed their admiration. It's sort of like trance music. I think that Led Zep used them in one of their Page/Plant recordings. The Stones used them in their song "Continental Drift".
The master drummers of Burundi have participated in some of the WOMAD (world of music art and dance) tours and were featured prominently in Peter Gabriel's song "Rhythm of the Heat" (a song about Carl Jung's experiences in Africa).
Within each of these groups, drumming is considered serious business. It is a calling that is handed down, father to son, from one generation to another.
