new records?? anyone?
Ok, so having not working in record stores for a while now, I'm feeling outta the loop.  We all know there's simply too many bands, and for that matter, too many bands with too many people in them (seriously, what is up with that shit?).  So, anyone know what's new and good?  I mean, other than Ascetic Records stuff?

I've been into the new Forms disc.  Crazy, crazy good record.

SO, I know there's been more releases than just the Forms record.  Where are the good ones?
Who's out there teaching these kids how to rock?

i'll second that forms record.  i can't think of another record in the past three years that i've been able to listen to three times a day and not get sick of.

BUT there is other stuff...

i like black moth super rainbow.  pretty hippie trippy in an electronic way but i like that stuff.  very nice and chill.  probably not showing kids how to rock per se but interesting still...

on the heavier tip, i dig this band baroness a lot.  righteous metal from georgia.  take mastodon and the sword and swirl them up with a dash of clutch and voivod - but just a dash.  cool shit.  their "red album" from last year is pretty great.

andrew, you checked out school of language yet?  spinoff from one of the field music dudes.  still soaking this in but so far, i like it pretty ok.

Word.  Yeah, what's up w/ the links not showing?
I'll check out these bands you list.  School of Lang.  I have heard some of.  Definitely dig it.   The band prior to that, name escapes me at the moment, I thought was fucking amazing.

I checked out the new High on Fire yesterday.  Holy shit it's tough.  It's like, I dig Mastodon and the Sword and all that, but...  there's something "legit" about High on Fire, in my own mind, as compared to all their peers, like, I feel they're doing it without that subtle smirk, ie: none of the dudes in that band were ever in indie/emo or ska bands.  I think I just like the dirtier sounding shit.  There's seriously some intense fucking riffs on the new disc.  And fuck.... Matt Pike is a legend from that Sleep record alone, ie: Jerusalem, ie: one song that's an hour long.  Insane.

Ah, and if you're into the old school soul/r & b thing, which I can make no claim to really be a super fan of, but the last two Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings are fucking unstoppable.  The production values are purposely dialed in to sound very very 1960's, and it's done so well, you'd swear it was some hidden motown or southern soul record from way back when.  The sound is awesome, the songwriting is crazy tasteful, and it's like the whole ridiculous and glitzy "neo soul" movement and 90's style r & b never happened.  Thank god.  I find all that shit to be totally irrelevant, and stylistically all within like 2 degrees of each other.  It's like new country or something.  Damn, did I just diss new country?  Whew!  I'm takin' all kindsa' risks today.

I must say I'm pretty bummed about the new Clientele.  That single, "Bookshop Casanova,"???  Are you ffucking kidding me?   It's like the death knell of a band when they put the pop-disco beat in their songs, you know the one, and try to write a "hit" around it.  What a drag.  Then again, a band can't release the same album over and over again.

Still need to buy the new B.B. & The Bro's record.

sweet,
andre

I heard the Dap Kings destroy live.

Jason if you like Black Moth, try out this band - Bear in Heaven.  If the link doesn't appear then find their myspace and listen to the song "Werewolf".  Their new album is one of my few pleasant discoveries this past year.  pretty stuff:
www.myspace.com/bearinheaven

On the Field Music / School of Language tip, the other brother, Peter Brewis, has just finished his project called The Week That Was.  I heard it yesterday, and It has to be the most intelligent album I've heard in a long long time.  He's posted a song on his new myspace page:
www.myspace.com/theweekthatwas

Not new at all, but my other favorite things right now....

Wire's The Ideal Copy (with the added Snakedrill EP).  Kick ass keyboard and guitar sounds all over.  Here's the song "Ahead":
youtube.com/watch?v=FvRgC0pMIoc

And I can't get over how amazing the music track / loop is on Positive K's "I Got A Man".  Remember this song from the early 90s?  Funkiest hip-hop track that I've ever heard.  It's hard to not shake ass to those guitars bass and horns.  Plus, he says "I'm clean cut and dapper, that's what I'm about".  Here's the video:
youtube.com/watch?v=AQyDSL1rQVQ

"Elmo's Wish" by Gil Mantera's Party Dream does not leave the head.  And the video rules:

Rad!  I couldn't find the Baroness stuff.  Just 800 chicks on myspace who think, for reasons unknown, they're worthy of such a title.  Black Moth.. was real cool.  I dig it.  Bear In Heaven was on the freaky good tip as well.

give www.myspace.com/bertjansch a listen.  I have to say, I'm not such a fan of his later stuff.  It's like, there's more singing and less interesting guitar stuff, and he ain't that great of a singer.  Regardless go to his myspace page and hear, "Runnin' From Home," and "Black Waterside," and witness the tune that Jimmy Page lifted for Zep 1.

Other than that... I got's nuthin.

yo.

i dig SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE.  i plan on catching them here in norman next week opening for neil hamburger (!).  i'm curious to check out THE WEEK THAT WAS.  it'll be interesting to hear and hypothesize who was repsonsible for which elements on all of the FIELD MUSIC stuff.

sadly, i missed GIL MANTERA'S PARTY DREAM here in okc just last monday due to being a broke ass mofo.  shame club andy turned me onto those guys and i was really hoping to catch some dance heaven.  maybe next time.

HIGH ON FIRE will be here in a couple weeks.  pumped.

other new shit:  saw BLACK MOUNTAIN here in norman the other night and they blew me away.  folky psychedelic proggy goodness.  a pretty unqiue mix of influences, i think.  great live band.  their new one, "in the future" is my first pick of '08, as well.

school of language cooked it real nice like.  blown away again already this year.  still need to pick up the album.

caught the paper chase a few weeks back.  solid as ever.  fantastic live band.  i always forget how great they are.  i always have a tough time describing them to people.  their new one drops this year, too.

a car wreck kept me from seeing high on fire.  maybe next century.

next week will be a 70s hard rock paradise for me as UFO are playing tuesday (all original members except for michael schenker - in his place is shredster legend VINNIE MOORE) and rush is on saturday.  can you say GEEKERY?

in an ascetic-related note, roma 79's "common man" has been treating me very nicely this week.

and what do you guys think about Torche ( ex floor ) "meanderthal"  ?
i think some of the tracks are quite good. Not too metal , quite catchy vocals.
Simple but nice.
